NONGKHIAW 3 days / 2 nights ex Luang Prabang
BEST OF NAM OU RIVER, VILLAGES & NATURAL DYES WORKSHOP
9.00am depart Luang Prabang, pick up from guesthouse or hotel in Luang Prabang. Arrive Nongkhiaw around lunchtime.
Afternoon free time to visit Patok Cave, this site was significant during the war as a safe haven for the local people. The cave is a 10 minute drive, 20 minute bike ride or a 40 minute walk.
You can take the Community Trek to the top of the mountain for the amazing view over the town, or take an inner tube and float down the river, or just relax riverside and enjoy the view. Evening free to enjoy one of the local restaurants. Overnight in Nongkhiaw.
DAY 2 (B,L)
Breakfast at Guesthouse. Met by local guide.
Take a small river boat to Ban Sop Jam, approx 1.5 hours upstream on the Nam Ou River. This is a beautiful remote Khmu and Lao village where they weave cotton and silk and are very friendly. The scenery along this river is very special with limestone karst mountains and small villages along the way. Stop at another village, for local tour and trekking. The trek is to a beautiful waterfall where you can swim. Trekking time is 1 hour to waterfall and 1 hour back. Picnic lunch is included.
Return to Nongkhiaw late afternoon.
Evening free to enjoy one of the local restaurants. Overnight in Nongkhiaw.
DAY 3 (B,L)
Breakfast at Guesthouse. Depart 9.00am.
The guide will meet you at the guest house and a private minivan willpick you up. Depart Nongkhiaw to visit two TaiLue cotton weaving villages. Visit the southern village with it's many traditional houses and temple. See different activities around the village depending on the season, in the dry season they are planting and harvesting tobacco, in the wet season rice. Many of the elders weave cotton and bamboo and are working under their houses. Move to the northern village and meet the weavers who will be teaching you the art of natural dyes and providing a home-cooked lunch. The workshop involves preparing hot dyes, jackfruit (yellow) and dyeing yam (red brown) and working with cold dye (indigo). You dye threads and a scarf, seeing the different ways the colours work and also look at different techniques to produce patterns. Once your materials have dried, return to Luang Prabang by vehicle.
